Trump Called 'Putin's Poodle' as European Media Decries Ukraine Remarks

Published Feb 20, 2025 at 12:35 PM EST

President Donald Trump has been dubbed, "Putin's poodle" and "Putin's parrot" as European media decries his recent remarks over Ukraine and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Why It Matters

On Wednesday, Trump took to Truth Social where he intensified his criticism of the Ukrainian leader, blaming him for starting a war that "couldn't be won." It comes as Trump pushes to end the three-year conflict on terms that Kyiv has argued are too favorable to Moscow. The war began on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.

Trump's comments came after Zelensky said he wanted "Trump's team to be more truthful, as Trump engages with President Vladimir Putin and Russia and pushes for a peace deal. That was Zelensky's first reaction to a series of statements Trump made on Tuesday.

Senior officials from Russia and the U.S. met the same day to discuss strengthening ties, negotiating an end to the war, and potentially arranging a meeting between Trump and Putin after years of strained relations. No Ukrainian officials took part in the talks.

What To Know

Newspapers and media outlets around Europe on Thursday responded to Trump's remarks about Zelensky.

Some outlets responded with satirical cartoons and mockery, while others took more direct aim at Trump, sharing concerns and criticism about his rhetoric about Ukraine.

The English paper the Daily Star depicted Trump as a poodle being walked by Putin on the front page. Their headline read "Putin's poodle," with the subhead "Orange Manbaby blames UKRAINE for being invaded."

The English right-leaning paper The Daily Mail wrote: "Trump appals world with 'dictator' blast at Volodymyr Zelensky," while the left-leaning The Guardian wrote: "Trump deepens rift with Ukraine by labelling Zelenskyy 'a dictator.'"

France's Le Monde wrote: "Ukrainians in shock after Trump's virulent attacks on Zelensky," Britain's the i paper wrote that the "rift" is growing between the U.S. and Ukraine over peace talks. The Daily Express branded Trump as "shameful" and wrote that the attack has stunned the world.

The Spanish outlet SER ran the title "Donald Trump is Putin's parrot." The Danish outlet Kiosko described him as "Crazy," and the French newspaper Le Soir referred to his method as "brutal."

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who attended Trump's inauguration in January, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Of course Ukraine didn't start the war. You might as well say that America attacked Japan at Pearl Harbor," in reference to Japan's surprise strike in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

When are we Europeans going to stop being scandalised about Donald Trump and start helping him to end this war?

Johnson also refuted Trump's remarks about Zelensky being a dictator and said: "Of course a country undergoing a violent invasion should not be staging elections. There was no general election in the UK from 1935 to 1945." Johnson went on to defend Trump, and said: "Trump's statements are not intended to be historically accurate but to shock Europeans into action."

What People Are Saying

France's Libération Newspaper: "Since his return to the White House, the billionaire has been waging a reactionary offensive unparalleled in American history."

Britain's Daily Express: "'Shameful' Trump attack stuns world."

The Irish Daily Mail: "Trump Stuns the World by Blasting Zelensky as a 'Dictator.'"

Politics Joe: "We are not living in normal times."

What Happens Next

Trump said he will "probably" meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia in the "not-too-distant future." Bloomberg reported that the meeting could occur before the end of the month.

U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who has called for a U.S. "backstop" in Ukraine to ensure a durable peace, is set to visit Trump next week.
